The Ultimate Guide to Portable Restrooms

From 26 Toilets to 6,000: The Throne Depot Story

The Throne Depot team, a leading portable restroom company in New England providing reliable sanitation services for events and construction sites

When people think about restroom rentals, they usually don’t spend much time considering who provides them. But behind every portable toilet is a team making sure the most important seat at any event is always ready when duty calls. That’s where The Throne Depot’s passion for potties comes in.

What started as a simple idea and a single truck has grown into one of the most trusted portable restroom providers in New England. Today, The Throne Depot supports thousands of weddings, festivals, events, construction projects, and municipal operations every year with reliable service, clean equipment, and a team that takes pride in doing the job right.

Spotting a Royal Opportunity in New England

In the early 2000s, Steve Brodeur and Mike Cormier, co-founders of The Throne Depot, were working in other industries when they noticed something surprising. That portable restroom service in Massachusetts didn’t really exist.

There were very few companies in the region providing portable restroom service, and those that did left many job sites and events stuck with poorly maintained units and unreliable service; not exactly the kind of “royal treatment” customers deserved. That gap in the market sparked a simple question: Why not start a portable restroom company that does things better? So, in 2005, Steve and Mike did.

The company initially launched under the name Honey Huts, but within 30 days, they realized the name needed more personality. So, Honey Huts became The Throne Depot, a name that people remember, easily link to portable restrooms, and even smile at.

Every big company starts somewhere. In this case, it started with a single throne. One portable restroom delivered to Boston Sand & Gravel. “We dropped it off, then drove the truck all the way back with nothing else to do. But we were so excited, Steve said.”

Growing the Throne Empire

The early days were a hustle. The founders relied on relationships in construction to land their first customers. Word-of-mouth helped grow the business as contractors realized they could finally get reliable restroom rental service from a company that cared about maintaining its equipment.

By the end of the first year, the company had already expanded from 26 units to roughly 200 portable toilets.

The growth continued steadily. More trucks were added. More customers came on board. And The Throne Depot slowly built a reputation across Massachusetts for dependable service. But the road to growth wasn’t always smooth.

Keeping it Going When the Economy Flushed

When the financial crisis hit in 2008, many small businesses struggled to survive. The Throne Depot was no exception. Financing dried up. Construction slowed. Growth stalled. But instead of giving up, the co-founders adapted.

“There was no money to borrow during the crash, so we bought 100 used toilets from Maine and just kept going, Steve said.”

At the time, both founders were still working full-time jobs while building The Throne Depot on the side. Every dollar earned went right back into the business.

“Mike and I didn’t take a salary for the first five years. We put everything back into the company,” said Steve.

That dedication paid off. By 2010, the company had grown to three trucks and around 600 restrooms.

A Throne for Every Kind of Event

As the business stabilized and the economy improved, The Throne Depot began expanding its portable toilet offerings.

Construction crews need durable restrooms that can handle long days on busy job sites. Brides and grooms want something a little more elegant than the standard box. Municipalities need accessibility, reliability, and scalability for large events.

The Throne Depot added to its inventory to cover all types of events, from standard portable units to VIP restroom trailers that are wedding-guest approved. Their products include:

    • ADA-compliant handicap units
    • Handwashing stations
    • Fresh water systems
    • Crane units
    • VIP flushable restrooms for weddings and events
    • Restroom trailers for upscale gatherings

By 2016, the company had surpassed 2,100 portable restroom units and a growing fleet of service trucks.

This variety allows customers to match the right restroom setup to their needs. For large events, a mix of standard units, ADA-accessible restrooms, and portable handwashing stations ensures guests stay comfortable while maintaining hygiene and safety.

Whether it’s a backyard wedding, a city festival, or a construction project that lasts months, The Throne Depot helps clients get the setup just right.

The Throne Depot is a great company to work with. The representatives are very easy to contact and the reply quickly. Pricing is very good. Our deliveries are always right. We have been very pleased with The Throne Depot.

Answering the Call

One of the company’s defining moments came in 2018 following the Lawrence gas explosion.

During the emergency response, The Throne Depot worked with FEMA for 71 straight days, providing restrooms, restroom trailers, and non-potable water to support recovery operations.

“It put us on the map,” Steve said. “Seventy-one days straight, twenty-four hours a day. Whatever FEMA needed, we made it happen.”

When communities need help, reliable infrastructure matters. And The Throne Depot is ready to serve when that infrastructure happens to be portable restrooms.

Pivoting When the World Hit Pause During the Pandemic

When the pandemic shut down events in 2020, many companies in the event services industry struggled. But The Throne Depot adapted quickly.

“We’re not from the victim mentality. Within 30 days, we were manufacturing sinks and hand sanitizer stands in-house,” said Steve.

By the end of the year, the company had built 290 sanitizer stands, helping support first responders, municipalities, and essential businesses during an uncertain time.

That same year marked another turning point. The Throne Depot purchased a 20,000-square-foot headquarters in Billerica, Massachusetts, giving the company the space it needed to scale operations significantly.

A Royal Portable Toilet Presence Across New England

With events returning and infrastructure projects ramping up again, Throne Depot entered one of the most exciting growth periods in its history. What began as a small operation with one truck and a few dozen portable restrooms had evolved into a regional sanitation powerhouse, serving a wide range of industries and communities.

Today, Throne Depot employs more than 70 team members and operates a fleet of 46 trucks supporting an inventory of over 6,000 portable restrooms and approximately 40 restroom trailers. This expanded fleet allows the company to serve everything from large construction sites and municipal projects to weddings, festivals, and community events across the region.

That growth has also extended The Throne Depot’s service footprint well beyond its original territory. The company now provides portable restroom and sanitation services throughout most of Massachusetts, southern New Hampshire, southern Maine, Rhode Island, southern Connecticut, and nearly all of Cape Cod.

And the expansion didn’t stop there. With demand continuing to grow, Throne Depot opened a second facility in Rehoboth, Massachusetts, further strengthening its ability to serve customers in southeast Massachusetts and Rhode Island while positioning the company for even more growth in the years ahead.

The Team Behind the Thrones

Ask Steve and Mike what truly built the company, and the answer isn’t trucks or toilets. It’s people.

“The backbone of this company is our team of drivers, dispatchers, customer service, technicians, and operations. The people who show up every day and take care of our customers,” Steve said.

Together, they make sure every delivery happens on time, and every restroom is serviced properly, whether it’s a major music festival, a construction project, or a backyard wedding.
